The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck, wrapped around the windpipe (trachea). The thyroid produces hormones T3 and T4 (thyroxine) to control your metabolism. Metabolism is a process that transforms ingested food into energy. When your thyroid works properly, it will maintain the right amount of hormones to keep your metabolism working at the right rate. Thyroid disease occurs when your thyroid doesn’t produce the right amount of hormones. When your thyroid doesn’t work properly, it can either make too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), or cancer nodules. None of these has to be your problem. The surgeons at the Medical Arts Surgical Center are always ready to help you pick the right treatment options to relieve you of your symptoms.

Thyroid Conditions

What are the Thyroid Conditions
Thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be caused by other diseases that impact the way the thyroid gland works. Examples of hypothyroidism include thyroiditis (an inflammation or swelling of the thyroid gland), iodine deficiency, and a malfunctioning thyroid. Graves’ disease, nodules, thyroiditis, and excessive iodine are the underlying conditions that cause hyperthyroidism.

MEDICATIONS AND OPEN SURGERY
An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is usually treated by taking daily synthetic hormone replacement tablets called levothyroxine. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), on the other hand, is usually treatable using the best option to meet your needs. Treatment approaches include medication, radioactive iodine treatment, and/or surgery. Traditional open and endoscopic thyroidectomies involve having an incision front and center of the throat, leaving a visible neck scar.

ROBOT-ASSISTED SURGERY
Innovative surgeons utilize the latest medical technology to perform robotic-assisted surgery to remove the thyroid by accessing the thyroid gland through a small incision (5-7cm) incision under the arm. This does not result to any scarring, unlike in open surgery.

Scarless thyroid surgery is a very modern form of thyroid surgery and is only performed by a handful of surgeons world wide. The scarless robotic thyroidectomy uses a state-of-the-art robotic technology for treating thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers. For almost all patients who want a scarless thyroid operation, the robotic approach is the best.

Our robotic technology offers a “scarless” neck procedure just for you!
Our surgeons at the MASG have received the required advanced training to perform robot-assisted procedures to treat thyroid diseases. In comparison to open surgery, robotic thyroid surgery results in less pain, fewer complications like infected wounds, shorter hospital stays, reduced recovery times, and a faster return to work and regular activities.
